3 Jugs interview puzzle – 12, 8 and 5 liter Jug

PUZZLE: You have three jugs. They can hold 12 liters, 8 liters, and 5 liters of milk or say water respectively. 12-liter jug is full of milk, but you need to split it in half using only the jugs on hand.

How can you split up the water to give away exactly 6 liter, and keep 6 liter?

Solution:

Steps and description

Fill 8 liter jug with milk from 12 liter jug and pour it into 5 liter Jug. (Now, 8 liter jug contains 3 liters milk.)

Empty 5 liter jug pouring milk back to 12 liter jug back and fill 3 liter milk from 8 liter jug into it.

At this point – 8 liter jag is empty. 5 liter jug contains 3 liters milk.

Now, fill 8 liter jug with milk from 12 liter jug again.

Pour it into 5 liter jug. Since 5 liter jug already contains 3 liter, so, it will accommodate more 2 liters milk from 8 liter jug.

At this point – 8 liter jag contains 6 liters milk and 5 liter jug contains 5 liters milk.

Empty 5 liter jug pouring milk back to 12 liter jug back.

At this point – 8 liter jag contains 6 liters and 12 liter Jug contains 6 liters milk.

This is the answer we want – 12 liter Jug contains 6 liters milk only.
